THE ISLAND

Tanera Mor lies 1.5 miles offshore from Achiltibuie in the mouth of Loch Broom, and is the largest island in the Summer Isles group. With a plentiful fresh water supply, a deep sheltered anchorage and high lookout points, Tanera's history goes back to early Viking raids and beyond.

Today there is a salmon farm based in the bay, and in the summer sailing boats find shelter on their West Coast wanderings. The holiday cottages lie in the north side of the bay with spectacular views of the hills on the mainland.

There's a small cafe on Tanera and a Post Office selling our unique Summer Isles stamps. During the summer the island is visited briefly by the "Summer Queen" returning to Ullapool from her daily island cruise. A local boat also runs daily trips round the islands and takes fishing trips.

The Anchorage, TaneraOn Tanera, forget about cars and busy roads. Adjust to the unhurried pace of the west coast, enjoy the soft sea air and the ever-changing light of the long summer days. Photographers and Artists will have a field day. We have kayaks for hire, and a dinghy from which to fish in the bay for mackerel, not for salmon! There are also some very wily trout in the lock. In spring and summer there is a profusion of wild flowers and much bird activity around the cliffs and rocky coves from where you should be able to see seals and porpoises. The island is criss-crossed with tracks of otters, which are seen occasionally by the very patient, or very lucky!
